The WWE United Kingdom Championship was established on December 15, 2016, and first awarded to Tyler Bate, who prevailed in a 16-man tournament held over two nights in Blackpool, England, in January 2017, serving as the top title of WWE's United Kingdom division and later the NXT UK brand. The physical belt was built on the same structural template as the 2014 WWE Championship, but distinguished itself with a center plate modeled after the United Kingdom's royal coat of arms, depicting a lion and a horse flanking a shield topped with the crown jewels, with the banners reading "United Kingdom"
