The WWE Divas Championship was created in 2008 as a SmackDown-exclusive title to give that brand's female talent a championship of their own, with Michelle McCool defeating Natalya at The Great American Bash on July 20, 2008, to become the inaugural champion; it later absorbed the long-running WWE Women's Championship in a unification match at Night of Champions in September 2010.
