The WCW World Heavyweight Championship was established on January 11, 1991, when Ric Flair was recognized as its inaugural champion after splitting from the NWA World Heavyweight Championship lineage, and it served as the most prestigious and prized title in World Championship Wrestling until the promotion was purchased by the WWF in March 2001.
