The ECW World Heavyweight Championship was first introduced in 1992 under Eastern Championship Wrestling as an NWA-affiliated title, but it became a true world championship on August 27, 1994, when Shane Douglas won an NWA tournament final, immediately threw down the NWA belt, and proclaimed himself the new ECW World Heavyweight Champion, an act that simultaneously severed the promotion from the NWA and rechristened it Extreme Championship Wrestling.
