The ECW Championship was the top title of Extreme Championship Wrestling, established in its modern form on August 27, 1994, when Shane Douglas won a tournament for the vacant NWA World Heavyweight Championship, immediately threw down the NWA belt, and proclaimed himself the first ECW World Heavyweight Champion, effectively launching ECW as an independent promotion.
